Why landlords should issue rent receipts

A rent receipt protects both sides. The tenant can prove they paid, and the landlord has a dated record if a question comes up later about arrears, deposits or tax.

What a rent receipt should show

Landlord and tenant names.
The property or unit, for example "House 4, Block B".
The month or period the payment covers.
The amount, the date received and the payment method.
The M-Pesa or bank transaction code.

Should I keep copies?

Yes. Keep a copy of every receipt together with your bank or M-Pesa statements. This tool saves your last receipt in your browser, but keep your own backup of the PDF.

Does rent attract VAT?

VAT treatment depends on the type of property and your situation, so check with KRA or an accountant. VAT is switched off by default on this page.

Can I issue one receipt for several months?

Yes. Add a line for each month, or one line describing the period paid.
